t-shirt
For this project, I designed a custom t-shirt graphic from initial concept through print-ready artwork. The process began with 100 planning sketches to explore ideas, themes, and compositions without committing too early to one direction. From those sketches, I developed three distinct concepts and refined them until one was selected as the strongest direction to move forward with. Along the way, I also learned how to properly set up an Illustrator file for t-shirt printing, including managing overlapping layers and limiting and organizing colors so the artwork could be separated cleanly for screen printing. The final result is a design that balances creative expression with the technical requirements of screen printing.
The first step was choosing a prompt to guide the design, and “nice rack” was selected for its playful double meaning and its flexibility as a starting point. Using it as the foundation for my focal design.
Once the sketch was decided upon then I took it into Adobe Illustrator to vectorize the sketch. I had added type and did a image trace over my original sketch as shown above. Although it is a legible sketch, it was messy and needed some refinement before going into the last critique.
